PG&E Energy Saving Program - May

Date:  5/7/2010

Each month during 2010 we are partnering with PG&E to present a program designed to reduce your energy usage and cost. All programs are either no cost, or low cost with a quick return on investment.

Evaporator Fan Motor Rebate program

In May, install energy efficient evaporator fan motors in walk-in refrigeration boxes. Old and inefficient shaded pole type evaporator fan motors typically consume 140 watts, where as new energy efficient electronically commutated motors (ECMs) use only 45 watts. Installation of ECMs will reduce annual operating costs by $140 per motor. These energy efficient motors also produce less heat, thus yielding additional energy savings for the walk-in coolers and freezers. Motors run $150, with $100-150 for installation. SF Energy Watch is offering a $125 rebate (www.sfenergywatch.org/library),dropping net cost of purchase and installation to $150, producing a one year return on the investment. For restaurants outside of San Francisco PG&E is offering a $50 per motor rebate.

Ice Machine Rebate Program

When purchasing or leasing a new ice machine, specify the largest ice making capacity head and bin possible. Larger machines are inherently more energy efficient, using less energy for every 100 lbs of ice made. Larger capacity machines afford the opportunity to turn the machine off during the peak utility rate period between Noon and 6 PM when electricity costs more for operators on time of use rate schedules like an E-19 or A-10. For example, a 500 lb machine shifted entirely off peak with a time clock will save approximately $180 per year in operating cost.

A reminder that PG&E field representatives are available to perform free energy audits of GGRA member restaurants with the goal of finding energy and water saving opportunities in each of a facility's energy using systems - cooking appliances, HVAC/kitchen exhaust, lighting, refrigeration, sanitation and water heating. While supplies last and where appropriate, members will also receive a FREE, ultra-efficiency, high performance pre-rinse nozzle for immediate energy and water savings.
